Curls + Controllers is a monthly subscription box for curly haired nerds. This box contains natural hair product samples along with nerdy trinkets and accessories. We provide black girl gamers with the tools they need to learn how to take care of their hair and be chic geek. Curls + Controllers’ products mostly come from small and black business owners. We also pride ourselves on providing hair product samples with natural ingredients.

Biography:

Junae Benne, Natural Hair Gamer, founded this company because she wanted to combine the love for learning how to take care of her hair with her gamer lifestyle. She does product reviews so many of the products she has used herself. There are so many female gamers who benefit from this box. Women are often overlooked in the gaming and beauty industry. Women of colour are especially overlooked within in the gaming and beauty industry. Benne saw the need for representation in both thus, Curls + Controllers is born.

With so many subscription boxes starting up what makes yours different?

This is the century of the subscription box. My box focuses on women of colour, women with kinky curly hair who are finding way to take care of it. And appeals to their nerdy pleasures.

How did you find a need for Curls + Controllers?

I noticed it’s hard to find a nerdy t-shirt in women’s size. I was buying small men’s or XXL in boys. It is also hard to find nerdy hair accessories for my fro. And with all these hair products you think they could make something healthy ones for naturally curly/coily hair. I combined my search for a chic geek lifestyle with trying to figure out the right products for my coily hair.

Where do your products come from?

My products are mostly supplied by small business owners or black business owners. I really like working with these types of owners because they put their heart into their product. We’re more of a family than a conglomerate.
