Evo Japan 2018
Evo Japan 2018 lost a great deal of money, $1.13 million, despite having 7,000 entrants, according to Heart United Group.
This is the first year EVO is held in Japan. This event was years in the making. The two top reasons for EVO Japan 2018’s financial lost are lack on sponsorship and having free entry into the tournament.
EVO Japan did gain some pretty name sponsors like, Asus, Alienware, Red Bull and Razer. Japan’s rules are a bit different about tournament payouts. They are only allowed to pay out 20 times the entry fee. In order to make this happen every tournament had free entry.
Another contributing factor to the financial loss of EVO Japan 2018 could be they had to change the venue in May 2017. This happened because they tested out the Akihabara UDX in Tokyo and decided to gain a bigger venue.
To sum everything up there weren’t any entry fees, not too many sponsorships and a bigger venue. The next EVO will be held in Mandalay Bay Las Vegas, NV Aug. 5th. *Personal opinion: Although the fighting game tournament, EVO, has been around for a long time, this is the first time it’s been done in Japan. And this type of hit seems to be common for first year tourneys or cons.*
